BoilerGuard

Stops magnetite dead in the water

wp4df2ad7c_0f.jpg

It’s black magnetite sludge - or commonly called ‘rust’! It gums-up the inside of your central heating system entirely - the radiators, the pipes and most especially, the boiler. And don’t think your heating system insurance will cover it - it doesn’t! In its early stages it can cause ‘air’ to form at the top of radiators, stop thermostatic radiator valves from working, and bring the circulating pump to a standstill. It will start to solidify inside your boiler’s heat exchanger - meaning not just a lack of heat, but a high degree of inefficiency too. Eventually, you’ll have to have your heating system ‘power-flushed’. But that’s only if you’re lucky, because black magnetite sludge can effectively mean the end of your heating system - and a £4,000 bill to replace it. Even if it can be power-flushed, the cost is likely to be around £500 for a typical system. Yet it’s all preventable.

Don’t wait until your radiators start going cold in the middle. By then, sludge build-up is severe.

The circulating pump is usually the first component on your system to fail due to magnetite-sludge build-up. By this stage you may not even have noticed that the bottoms of your radiators may be cool. Your heating engineer may well replace the pump, and may even ‘sell’ you a power-flush of your heating system - likely to cost around £500. Your boiler will have a good degree of magnetite-sludge present by this stage also. It might be noisy, inefficient, and likely to fail at any point - requiring expensive repairs, or even total replacement.

But all this is easily preventable. All that needs to be done is to install a magnetic filter on the ‘return’ pipe adjacent to your boiler...

As the sludge particles are simply rust, they are magnetic. All that has to be done to collect all those particles is introduce a magnetic field within the fluid line. Magnetic filters have been used in fluid systems for decades. They have proved themselves to be highly effective at removing damaging ferrous metals.
